UFC Vegas 77 concluded after a quick women’s bantamweight main event. Mayra Bueno Silva was able to become the third woman to finish Holly Holm in her 22 fight career.
The former bantamweight champion Holly Holm entered the fight with an 8-6 record in the UFC. Holm came in with wins in 3 of her last 4, including wins over Raquel Pennington and Irene Aldana.
Bueno Silva entered the fight on a 3 fight-win streak that includes 3 submission wins. She was scheduled to face Miesha Tate back in June, but the bout was canceled after Tate pulled out with an injury. Bueno Silva holds a 5-2-1 record in the UFC, and a win over Holm skyrockets her ranking and chances to fight for the title.
The women’s bantamweight division’s future has been in question following the retirement of former champion Amanda Nunes. Julianna Pena has pushed for her opportunity at the vacant title as she is the last woman to defeat Nunes. Despite this, women like Holly Holm and Raquel Pennington have staked their claims toward a title shot. With a win over Bueno Silva, it’s possible we see Holm in a vacant title fight later this year. The same goes for Bueno Silva who came in looking to prove she deserved to fight for the vacant title.

Holm controlled much of the first round with her clinch game, something she’s used to win her last couple fights. That gameplan failed in round 2 when Bueno Silva countered with a ninja choke in the clinch, forcing Holm to tap just over a minute into the round.
The win secures Mayra Bueno Silva a top 5 ranking in the division and throws her name into title conversations. The Brazilian called out former champion Julianna Pena after the win, seeking a bout for the vacant title. While the division seems to be in a stale place, Bueno Silva could be the fresh blood needed to bring hope to the division. She called out both Julianna Pena and Raquel Pennington in her post-fight speech, claiming that “no one wants to see that fight” while pushing for a title shot of her own.
