At his media day interview, Tom Aspinall said that he believes he is now ready to fight Jon Jones. For now the focus is Marcin Tybura at UFC London this Saturday, but it is clear that Aspinall has his sights set on the champion.
Tom Aspinall Wants Jon Jones
Aspinall is back and raring to go. When asked if he thinks he is ready for Jon Jones, he simply replied: “Yes.” After giving his opinion on Jones’ upcoming bout with Stipe Miocic, Aspinall said he hopes Jones will stick around.
“That’s my dream fight. My goal in the future moving forward is not only to win, but I want to excite Jon Jones. At this point he probably doesn’t know who I am. I want him to watch me in the next few fights and think I need to stick around for this guy,” said Aspinall.
Taking Tybura Seriously
Aspinall told reporters that he isn’t thinking too far ahead of Tybura at UFC London on Saturday. He said: “He does a lot of things well and I don’t understand why people are counting him out because he’s won seven of his last eight. That’s a pretty good record if you ask me.”
“He’s very durable, he doesn’t quit which is pretty rare for a heavyweight,” continued Aspinall. “I’ve taken him extremely, extremely seriously.”
Aspinall went on to give his opinion on the heavyweight rankings and how close he thinks he is to a title shot. He said: “If I go out there and knock him out in 30 seconds with some crazy spinning elbow, that’s going to put me as the number one contender and that’s just the way it works. It doesn’t always come down to rankings. It all depends on how the fight goes Saturday.”
Return From Injury And Getting Back To Full Health
The heavyweight from Manchester has spoken a lot about the struggles he faced after injuring his knee. His fight against Curtis Blaydes was supposed to be a springboard into stardom and a possible title fight, but he tore knee ligaments just 15 seconds into the bout.
Aspinall said that the injury gave him the chance to “get everything right” in his life, despite the physical and mental challenges it posed. He said: “I put all good stuff in my body, took the right rest and I did everything to get back better than when I left.”
It won’t be long now before Aspinall will once again get to show the world what he is all about.
“The close people to me know that I was getting through these training camps and fights with one leg. Me with two legs has definitely a lot more to offer. It will surprise a few people how I move around the octagon on Saturday,” he said.
