Paulo Costa presses the action and takes the fight to Luke Rockhold. Both were tired and it was an unbelievable fight at UFC 278. It ends with Paulo earning a unanimous decison 30-27 x 3.
Round one
Round one starts and the energy can be felt in the arena. A bright start for Luke is soon erased. Paulo Costa has serious power and he looks to land it on Rockholds chin. After landing on Luke he has the former champion backing up.
Then surprisingly lands a takedown. After an extended period on the ground, which Costa had the best of. Back on his feet Luke looks tired but tries to find his groove. This ends the round.
Round Two
Rockhold starts the round like a bullet out of a gun. Landing two huge left hands that seem to wobble Costa. Luke then attempts a takedown that Paulo deals with well. Luke’s nose is bleeding and he looks exhausted but he’s still swinging.
Both are throwing sluggish shots at one another. Rockhold is looking for that one big land to end the fight. In an exchange Paulo lands a huge punch to the cup haunting the action for 5 mins.
Back to the action despite the fatigue, everything has bad intentions. The round ends with Paulo Costa pressing the action.
Round Three
Three starts with Paulo on the front foot. After throwing a spin kick Luke gets him to the mat and rushes to capitalise, but Costa reverses. Bombs are flying and a huge right sends Paulo backwards.
A shot at a takedown from Luke Rockhold goes nowhere. This sees Paulo Costa gain top control. Paulo takes the back and looks to find the neck. Luke Rockhold regains top control and is rubbing blood on Costa ending the round.
This fight was bonkers. Luke Rockhold goes all three with an absolute killer. Both ate and gave huge shots and gave every last ounce of energy to win. Despite not getting the win Luke there was a lot of positives and without the fatigue, this fight could have been different.
Paulo Costa does the job and earns the win in a slugfest. Luke Rockhold retires in a post-fight interview.
