Last Friday Matchroom held one of their “next-gen” shows which aim to raise the profile of upcoming British boxing talent. The headliner for this show was Pat Brown making his pro-debut at cruiserweight. Brown was signed by Eddie Hearn‘s Matchroom a few months ago following Brown’s decision to go pro and for good reason. Brown has a limited but impressive amateur pedigree with a record of 19-4. During his time in the amateurs he won England Boxing National Amateur Championships 2021 under 91kg category and the 2022 under 92kg category. He also won the 2023 Tammer Tournament and would qualify for the 2024 Olympics. He would make it to the Olympics but unfortunately not making it far losing in the preliminaries. And now he looks to make a name for himself in the pros.
Pat Brown Debut
For his debut Brown was given Federico Grandone who is 6’1 Argentinian with a record of 7-5-2. A reasonable level of opponent given Brown was making his debut but still someone who he should win against. Brown was much larger being 6’6 and was slightly heavier weighing in at 204.75lbs compared to Grandone who weighed in at 202.75lbs.
As for the actual fight Brown demonstrated showed he meant business. From the get-go Brown applied educated pressure stalking his opponent and showed great variety in his shots. Brown demonstrated some good selection mixing up to head and body well. The output from Brown would continue throughout the fight and he would not struggle to land. However, the outmatched Grandone would also not struggle to land too much landing left hooks throughout the fight. But, Brown was able to take the shots no problem.
As the fight wore on Brown would land more frequently and was starting to hurt Grandone in round 3 who continued to battle on. Grandone would barely survive round 3 and Brown continued to pile on the pressure in round 4 against a less responsive Grandone. A standing 8 count would be administered as Grandone was being battered against the ropes which he would make. However, not long after Brown would land combinations with no answer and the ref stopped the fight.
Overall, it was a very impressive debut for the Mancunian, who demonstrated his skill as well as entertainment value. It will be interesting to see how he will be moved along given his pedigree and talent. Regardless he is definitely a prospect to keep an eye out for and we shall see where he goes from here.
