Not the most fan-friendly fight but on short notice Mateusz Gamrot pulls through and scores a wrestling-heavy win at UFC 285.
Round 1
A bright start sees both men press forward and look to land. A fantastic entry sees Gamrot grab the legs and secure a takedown. Jalin does not wilt and manages to get against the fence and find his feet. Gamrot remains in the driver’s seat against the fence. Turner breaks the clinch brilliantly.
Back in the open another takedown from Gamrot sees Turner look for the back but Mateusz does well to gain top position. Jalin once again stays active off his back and finds his feet a second time.
Round 2
The distance management for Gamrot has been solid thus far. Standing just out of range of the Turner jabs and kicks. Mateusz is putting in work with the low calf kicks. A failed takedown attempt sees the bout open up as each man lands shots. Turner gets the better of the exchange and Gamrot gets temporarily hurt.
Shaking off the cobwebs Gamrot secures a takedown with ninety seconds remaining. He finds himself in the crucifix and begins to rain down blows. Mateusz remains in control to close the round.
Round 3
Into the third Gamrot gets another takedown moments after narrowly avoiding a knee. The entries from Gamrot have been excellent so far. Jalin once again stays calm, scoots back to the cage and finds his feet in a clinch against the cage.
The referee breaks the clinch after he deems the position to be inactive. Back in the open Turner lands a big one-two that wobbles Gamrot who responds with an unsuccessful takedown. The fight ends with Gamrot on top.
An extremely competitive fight proves why these two are ranked inside the lightweight top 10. In the end, it’s the wrestling prowess that proves prevalent as Gamrot secures the split decision victory (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)
