Leah McCourt, a top contender in the Bellator women’s featherweight division, recently shared unfortunate news with her fans and followers.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, McCourt revealed the extent of her injuries sustained during a sparring session, forcing her to withdraw from her highly anticipated bout against Sinead Kavanagh at Bellator 302.

“Devastated to have to write this and let you know during a sparring accident I sustained a broken rib & torn oblique. I cannot get medically cleared to fight nor could I physically be able to fight in Belfast,” McCourt shared on Instagram.

Expressing her disappointment at missing out on the opportunity to compete, McCourt emphasized the excruciating pain she is experiencing and the uncertainty surrounding her recovery timeline. Despite the setback, she remains optimistic, trusting in a greater plan and expressing gratitude for the support she has received from her medical team at Kingsbridge Private Hospital.

“The muscle has been ripped from the bone and the pain is excruciating… I trust God’s plan that all these things are part of something big and better ahead,” McCourt added.

The significance of the fight against Kavanagh was evident, as it was poised to be a rematch of their 2022 encounter in Dublin, where McCourt displayed resilience despite sustaining a knee injury. Kavanagh emerged victorious in that bout, securing a decision win.

McCourt’s aspirations had previously centered around challenging Bellator featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino. However, the recent acquisition of Bellator by the PFL has led to a shift in plans regarding Justino’s next fight within the promotion.

The Event in Belfast

Despite McCourt’s withdrawal, the event in Belfast, slated to kick off the new Bellator Champions International Series, will proceed as planned. Headlined by Corey Anderson and Irish contender Karl Moore, the event promises to deliver thrilling action to combat sports enthusiasts.

As McCourt navigates her recovery journey, her resilience and determination serve as a testament to her unwavering commitment to her craft and her fans. Her setback may delay her aspirations, but it will undoubtedly fuel her drive to return stronger than ever.
