Eddie Hearn ‘delighted’ after revealing Leo Atang as his latest signing for Matchroom Boxing
With the likes of Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury either being closer to the end of their career than the beginning or seemingly ‘retired’, the hunt for the next big thing in British heavyweight boxing is now more relevant than ever for promoters like Eddie Hearn.
Daniel Dubois, Fabio Wardley and Moses Itauma currently occupy this limelight. They look set to be relevant in the heavyweight division for years to come. However, Matchroom Boxing’s latest signing in Leo Atang, could be set to join this current crop of British heavyweights at the top of the division in the future.
Atang, who is managed by former flyweight world champion Sunny Edwards, joins Eddie Hearn’s stable of fighters off the back of an impressive amateur career.
Atang holds an amateur record of 16-1, with 8 of those wins coming via stoppage. In the amateurs, the 18-year-old holds many impressive accolades, such as winning the World Boxing Under-19 world championships in 2024, whilst also being a five-time national champion.
Eddie Hearn reacted to the signing of Leo Atang by saying:
“Leo possesses all of the attributes to make it to the very top, and we can’t wait to get this journey underway.”
“Naturally, there was a lot of interest in landing the signature of one of the very best prospects in Britain, and we’re delighted that Leo and his team have chosen us to guide his career.”
Eddie Hearn Makes a Dream Come True-
Leo Atang also gave his thoughts after realising his ‘dream’ of signing with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
“It’s a dream come true to sign with Matchroom,” said Atang.
“My team and I have had many good conversations leading to me turning pro. But I knew this one just felt right from the start. It’s what I always hoped for.
“We put the work in and we put the hours in. I live the life. My mentality is – push myself to the absolute limit and leave no stone unturned. I’m fit, I’m strong, and I’ll be ready to go with anyone tomorrow.
“I’ve got what it takes to go to the top of this sport. The future is here.”
Atang’s pro-debut set for this summer?
In a recent interview with NOTJUSTBOXING, Atang revealed what fans can expect from him and his plans for his debut.
“You can expect a lot of speed, a lot of knockouts and a lot of fun. Big nights.
“We’re just going through all the medicals at the moment, but fingers crossed, I want to be out by summer,” Atang said.
After being inspired by Anthony Joshua, only time will tell whether Atang can replicate this success for Eddie Hearn.
