Sky Sports and Boxxer have announced that the latest Saturday fight night, which featured headlines Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Williams broke previous viewing records on Sky. The event surpassed one million in-home viewers. Boxxer’s Cardiff event kicked off a huge month of boxing coming up on Sky Sports. Boxing was suspended for January due to covid precautions.
Sky Sports Head of Boxing Development Adam Smith said:
“Over one million people watched our big Sky Sports Fight Night in Cardiff, with more big fights to come this month. Our Audience is growing, and we couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come.”
Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Williams Break Sky Sports Record
Chris Eubank Jr defeated Liam Williams via unanimous decision. Eubank scored a total of four knockdowns throughout the twelve round bout. Three of the knockdowns came in the first four rounds. Williams showed great heart to go the distance with Eubank after the horror start to the fight.
Clarissa Shields gave the fans a dominant performance as she defended her world middleweight titles against Ema Kozin. Shields won the bout via unanimous decision and won every single round. Despite not getting a spectacular finish, it was a night Shields wanted to showcase her skills in front of British rival Savannah Marshall. With Marshall sitting at ringside, she didn’t seem impressed with Shields performance. During the post-fight interview, Marshall was brought in and shared her thoughts towards Shields. This caused a heated war between the pair, arguably the best piece of action all night aside from the main event.
Despite an underwhelming undercard, the co-main and main event lured the viewers in. Viewing averaged at 585k throughout the whole night with a peak of 1.05M. This eclipsed previous records of Anthony Joshua vs Gary Cornish in 2015 and Amir Khan vs Samual Vargas in 2018. It was a successful night for promotional outfit Boxxer, with promoter Ben Shalom adding:
“Boxxer and Sky are committed to growing the sport and making boxing accessible. We believe in the potential of the sport to grow further. We’re working hard with Sky Sports to produce fight nights that give huge value to our core boxing audience whilst attracting new audiences into the sport.”
