Canelo vs Crawford is one of the biggest fights to be announced in the last few years. Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are 2 of the best pound-for-pound boxers we have in the modern era. Both are towards the end of their careers, and this sort of super fight is the cherry on top of some all-time great careers. With a fight of this magnitude, it is imperative to effectively advertise the fight and make it accessible. And that is what Turki Alalshikh has done, announcing that Canelo vs Crawford will be streamed on Netflix.
Netflix’s Involvement and Implications
So, Canelo vs Crawford and presumably the undercard will be streamed on Netflix. This absolutely huge having a fight of this calibre being streamed on one of the biggest streaming platforms in the world. This will make this fight extremely accessible, given the sheer scale of Netflix’s reach. This accessibility will no doubt mean this fight will have a very high viewership and do well.
This deal with Netflix is also significant in that it may cause a shift in boxing and combat sports as a whole. This isn’t the first time Netflix have streamed a boxing event, previously streaming Tyson vs Paul, and that undercard, which did very well. And now working with Riyadh season and the Saudis could cause a big shift in future events. We may very well see more Riyadh season cards on Netflix. This could also potentially see the death of the pay-per-view, which, although it sounds premature, is a possibility.
With Dana White’s involvement in promoting this fight specifically, we may also see the UFC move to Netflix. The UFC’s deal with ESPN is coming to an end and so a deal with Netflix could be pursued. This is helped by the fact that the UFC’s parent company, TKO, already have a deal with Netflix regarding WWE. So, we may also see a shift with the UFC, especially if Dana sees the success of Canelo vs Crawford first-hand.
Overall, this fight being on Netflix is a huge positive and hopefully we get to see the undercard announced soon.
