Leigh Wood returns to action this weekend against Anthony Cacace
Former WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood ends his lengthy hiatus from the ring when he returns to take on Anthony Cacace. The fight is set to take place this Saturday and will be broadcast live on DAZN.
Leigh Wood has not fought since his dramatic comeback against Josh Warrington, in which Wood was behind on the cards before securing a 7th-round knockout to defend his title.
This fight took place in October 2023, and after the bout, Leigh Wood revealed he would be moving up to super-featherweight.
Despite Wood’s transition from 126 to 130 pounds taking 18 months, promoter Frank Warren predicts his return to the ring against Cacace will be the “fight of the year.”
“I’m telling you now, this will be fight of the year,” Warren said at a recent press conference.
“It has fight of the year written all over it. This will be The Ring fight of the year for 2025.”
Tough test ahead for Wood
Anthony Cacace is far from an easy fight for Leigh Wood to return to, particularly when making his debut in a new weight class.
Cacace is one of the top-ranked fighters by The Ring at 130. The Northern Irishman previously held the IBF super-featherweight title after defeating Joe Cordina for the crown in May 2024.
However, he vacated his belt back in January to pursue ‘bigger fights’ like the one against Wood.
Coincidentally, Cacace’s last fight was also against Josh Warrington, with Cacace winning a unanimous decision in September.
Cacace holds the IBO title at super-featherweight, and whilst it is not a recognised world title, it would be a solid prize for Wood to pick up for his first fight in the division.
Opportunity for British boxing to steal the show
After last weekend’s fights failed to deliver, British boxing has another opportunity to grab headlines.
Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and Canelo Alvarez all recently had performances to forget in the US.
But with the Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn fight still fresh in the memory, another vintage Leigh Wood fight would keep the ball rolling for boxing domestically.
