Leigh Wood ‘excited’ to return to boxing after overcoming injury struggles
After not fighting since his win over Josh Warrington back in October of 2023, Leigh Wood is set to return to the ring this Saturday.
Wood, the former WBA featherweight champion, is set to move up to super-featherweight to take on Anthony Cacace for his IBO title.
In a recent interview on ‘The Ariel Helwani Show, ‘ Leigh Wood revealed why he has been out of action for so long.
“I got a really bad injury,” Wood said.
“I had some really bad politics, I couldn’t get the fight I wanted, and then we looked at the rematch with Warrington, then he fought Cacace.
“There just wasn’t the right fight for me anywhere else, and I had to pretty much wait for the winner,” Wood said.
“I’m so excited to get back in there. I’ve waited so long, and I’ve been through so much. I just want to go out there and show what I can do.”
Leigh Wood continued:
“It was more frustrating than anything. One injury after another. Then, when I got better I tried to run before I could walk and then I kept getting niggles. So I had to do nothing and rest. It was a long process.”
Wood previews his fight against Cacace
Anthony Cacace is a tough test for Wood on paper. Cacace was the IBF super-featherweight champion and never lost the belt inside the ring. Instead, the Northern Irishman vacated the belt to pursue fights against the biggest names possible.
Like Leigh Wood before his layoff, Cacace is also in fine form, winning his last eight fights. This run includes wins over notable names such as Josh Warrington and Joe Cordina.
When previewing Cacace as an opponent, Wood said he has been ‘shocked’ by his opponent’s recent success.
“Cordina was a massive win, shocked a lot of people. I didn’t think the fight was going to go that way, so I was shocked myself.
“Credit to him. Again, he’s the same age as me, he’s had the most success at the tail end of his career, and it’s going to make for a great fight.
“We’re both on good form. Obviously, I’ve had a little layoff, but a lot of people are banking on my layoff to be the determining factor in this fight, but I can tell you it’s not going to be.” Leigh Wood said.
