Jaime Munguia Fails Vada Drug Test & Now Issues Statement
Following his rematch win over Bruno Surace, Jaime munguia has failed a VADA test after testing positive for a banned substance.
The former WBO world champion, returned an adverse analytical finding for an exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites in a urine sample taken by VADA which would’ve came around his May 4th rematch with Surace in Saudi Arabia. This comes, according to Ring Magazine.
The rematch came about, after Munguia was shockingly knocked out by Surace in December. It was a massive upset, Munguia was a huge favourite, and was cruising on the scorecards before the knockout. For the much anticipated rematch in Saudi, Jaime teamed up with Eddie Reynoso, longtime coach of Canelo Alvarez.
In the rematch, Munguia was disciplined and boxed to a unanimous decision victory. He was patient, worked his jab, and less erratic than previous fights.
The bout was sanctioned by the British Board of Control. Munguia will now likely face a suspension from. However, he has requested a B-sample. This could come back negative. Furthermore, his rematch win over Surace will likely be moved to a no contest.
Jaime Munguia Issues Statement
Jaime Munguia broke his silence on the situation with a statement he released. He stated he was shocked when he found out. The statement read:
“Throughout my boxing career, I have undergone numerous anti-doping tests and have never tested positive. I was tested twice during this training camp, and both results came back negative, which is why receiving this notification of an adverse finding has been a complete surprise to me.”
“Several experts have explained that there are multiple ways contamination can occur, and I am fully willing to undergo any retroactive, current, or future testing to demonstrate that I have always been a clean athlete.”
He ended his statement by saying he will say no more on the matter.
Bruno Surace Releases Statement
Since the news, Munguia’s opponent, Surace has since released a statement to Ring Magazine which read:
“I’m shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance. There’s no place in boxing for cheating; the sport is dangerous enough already.”
He added: “I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguía fair and square in December and I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May. He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field. I trust that this result will be overturned immediately.”
