Dustin Poirier is a name every MMA fans knows, a veteran of lightweight and considered one of the best fighters to never win a full championship. Poirier has an all-time great resume and is cherished by the fanbase especially with his career nearing its end. For a while Poirier has suggested his career is almost done and has now confirmed it. On The Pat McAfee show Poirier announced he will be having his retirement fight in a trilogy bout against Max Holloway.
Dustin Poirier vs Max Holloway 3
Poirier not only announced the fight but also provided the details. The bout will be the main event of UFC 318 on July 19th and will be for Holloway’s BMF title. Furthermore, the event will take place in Poirier’s home state of Louisiana. This is a fight very fitting for Poirier’s retirement and will undoubtedly be an excellent fight.
Poirier welcomed a young Holloway to the UFC at featherweight and would win by decision in 2012. Again, Poirier and Holloway would clash in 2019 with Holloway taking the fight short notice and moving up to 155lbs. Again Poirier would win by decision however, the fight was hard fought with Holloway giving Poirier all he could handle. And now they will be meeting again.
However, the circumstances for this fight are very different. Both men are older and more experienced, continuing to improve as well as taking more damage. Most importantly, this fight is not on short notice, is Poirier’s retirement fight, and will be at 155lbs. This means Holloway will have adequate prep time to bulk up and Poirier will be motivated as ever to retire on a win.
This fight will be a great clash of styles as seen in the previous fights, and in all honesty, will likely be the best of both men. Both men are still at the top of their game and have only improved since their last fight. We shall see fight night if it will be repeat or revenge.
