Demetrious Johnson Reacts to Jon Jones Retiring
Following Saturday’s shock announcement that Jon Jones would retire, led to fans and fighters voicing their opinions. One of those was Demetrious Johnson, with the former flyweight champion revealing he was confused as to why Jones decided to retire. Meanwhile, there is a mixed reaction from fans with some happy that the division is finally progressing, whilst others are disappointed not to see Jones vs Tom Aspinall.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Demetrious Johnson said, “Deep down inside, I think Jon Jones, after he beat Stipe Miocic. I think he was down to fight Tom Aspinall. I think Jones asked the UFC for $30m, thinking the UFC was not going to give that to him.”
“But this is the thing we will never know. We’ll never hear from Jones’ mouth on why he didn’t take the Tom fight.
“Jones, I don’t understand why he didn’t fight him. If Jones was like, ‘Dude, I wasn’t gonna fight him, he’s young, he’s athletic, he’s dangerous. I don’t wanna risk my legacy, perfect, that’s all I need to hear.
Tom Aspinall Becomes New Heavyweight Champion
After what has been a difficult year for Tom Aspinall, he is finally the heavyweight champion. Since his last fight against Curtis Blaydes, Aspinall has had to wait for the UFC to announce a fight with Jon Jones.
Fans had been speculating that the fight would never go ahead, despite the pleas of Dana White that it would happen.Saturday’s announcement came as a surprise to Demetrious Johnson and many fans, but it also signals a new era in the heavyweight division.
