Chris Eubank Jr eyes a potential fight with Canelo Alvarez at a stadium in the UK
After defeating Conor Benn last weekend in a war, Chris Eubank Jr discussed the possibilities for his next opponent.
Eubank’s stock has never been higher than it is now. His fight with Conor Benn did a reported 620,00 pay-per-view buys according to The Ring in one of the biggest fights of the year.
Chris Eubank Jr told Sky Sports in a recent interview that Canelo Alvarez is an opponent that he wants to face in the future.
“That is another stadium filler. Absolutely. Wembley, Tottenham, any one of the large football stadiums in the UK would be filled for a fight like that.
“He is an opponent that I’ve been looking at for many years now, and the fans would love to see that. So 100% that’s a name that is in my line of sight, and we will be doing whatever we can to secure that fight in the future.”
Canelo is also open to a UK showdown with Eubank
Before any potential fight with Chris Eubank Jr, Canelo has to get through William Scull this weekend to become undisputed at super-middleweight.
Whilst doing media for his fight with Scull, Canelo said to iFL TV that he “promises” to fight in the UK before he retires.
He also revealed to Seconds Out that he would be open to facing Eubank Jr in the future.
“I’m focused 100% on what I have in front of me right now. In the future, it’s always a possibility, so we’ll see in the future.”
Why Canelo makes sense for Eubank
If Canelo unifies the titles at 168 pounds like most expect him to, an undisputed clash against Chris Eubank Jr would make perfect sense for the Englishman.
Fighting at super-middleweight would mean Eubank does not have to drain himself to make 160 pounds anymore.
Eubank has also been vilified and boo’d throughout the majority of his career. However, last Saturday, he and his father received a hero’s welcome to the ring.
A fight with Canelo would present Eubank Jr with an opportunity to finally win a recognised world title with the full backing of the British public behind him in what would be a full circle moment for the 35-year-old. All whilst receiving another handsome payday against the biggest name in boxing.
Whether the fight with Canelo is immediately next for Eubank Jr is yet to be seen.
The Conor Benn rematch may happen before, and you would not begrudge Eubank due to the amount of money involved.
When Chris Eubank Jr was asked about a potential rematch with Benn, he said:
“Watch this space. Boxing is a very beautiful industry where anything can happen. The possibilities are endless. If the rematch is meant to be, it will be,
“If not, guess what? There’s plenty of other amazing fights to be had and great things for me to achieve in the sport.”
