The British heavyweight scene has been thriving for the longest time, from the top of the division to the bottom. We have fighters at the top such as Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua rising contenders such as Fabio Wardley and hot prospects like Moses Itauma and Leo Atang. There are also plenty of other names between levels like Joe Joyce, Dillian Whyte, Frazer Clarke, etc. A recent addition to that pool was Olympian Delicious Orie who had a good amateur career and recently made his pro debut back in April on the Joyce vs Hrgovic card securing a points win. However, it appears Orie no longer has interest in pursuing a pro career in a recent Instagram post
Delicious Orie Retires
Orie’s announcement was made on Instagram with an post on May 27th. The post had a picture of himself at the Olympics and a lengthy caption. Orie said, “After much reflection, I have decided to hang up my gloves and retire from boxing to follow up on my degree and enter the corporate world. This sport has given me so much — incredible memories, unforgettable experiences travelling the world and many opportunities to represent my country at the biggest stages in the world. Forever grateful for the journey.”
He continued saying, “Over time, I’ve come to recognise that the same fire and love I once had for boxing has gradually faded. As I’ve grown, I’ve come to value clarity and honesty with myself above all. I hoped that turning professional would reignite the passion, but the truth has become clear: it hasn’t. Every fighter knows you need a deep love for the craft to reach the top — and without it, there’s no path forward. Out of respect for the sport and for myself, it’s time to step away with honesty.”
Orie finished off by saying, “To everyone who supported me along the way — thank you. To my coaches, teammates, staff at @gbboxing and to those who stood by me through my (albeit brief) professional journey – @seanotoole_1 and @paulready_ at @stnsports_ , Frank and George Warren at @queensberrypromotions and Grant Smith and his team in @steelcitygym — your belief, support and guidance meant the world ❤️”
Orie’s Legacy and Future
This was quite the reveal as Orie had given little indication he was even contemplating retirement. Regardless, he made his reasons clear after boxing for 8 years, he has lost his passion for this sport. As Orie said himself, passion is necessary to do well in a sport as dangerous as boxing so retirement is fitting. But at 27 years old he still has hopes and dreams involving the corporate world.
It is unfortunate to see someone so young to retire but if there is no passion there retirement is the best option. Orie still had an impressive amateur career that he can certainly be proud of. Most notably he participated in the Olympics, won the 2023 European Games, and won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He also won several other tournaments.
We wish Delicious Orie the best with his new career path and hopefully he will find a more fulfilling career which he is passionate about.
