Belal Muhammad predicts Ian Garry as a future title contender
The welterweight division in the UFC is currently stacked with contenders such as Leon Edwards, Kamaru Usman, Sean Brady and Shavkat Rakhmonov. Despite this welterweight champion Belal Muhammad believes Ian Garry is a strong contender to face him shortly.
Speaking to the Anik & Florian podcast, the champion said, “he (Ian Garry) looked like he got beat up. Especially in that fifth round [vs. Prates]. But he’s trying, right? Especially in a division now where people are saying there isn’t a clear number-one contender. Shavkat, we don’t know when he’s coming back. You have Sean Brady, who looked great against Leon Edwards. Kamaru [Usman] and [Joaquin] Buckley, they’re about to fight each other.
Belal Muhammad also said, “So I think for [Ian], he’s just trying to put his name in the mix and think he’s going to cement himself as being the backup. But you never know what the UFC wants. I think if Kamaru wins, they’ll make Kamaru skip the line, no matter what.”
Irishman desperate for a title opportunity
Following a close-fought victory over Carlos Prates Ian Garry will be hoping to secure a title fight. With a record of sixteen wins and one defeat, the Irishman will be hoping to become the second Irishman to win a UFC title.
With champion Belal Muhammad preparing for his upcoming fight this weekend at UFC 315, Ian Garry could potentially be the backup fighter for the main event. If either Muhammad or Jack Della Maddalena is unable to compete this weekend it could see the prospect thrown in the Octagon. Blessed with quick hands and lightning quick reflexes Ian Garry has risen through the ranks of the welterweight division in quick succession.
