Tom Aspinall didn’t hold back as he gave his live reaction to the Americans’ defeat.
Tom Aspinall Criticises Sean O’Malley Following His UFC 316 Defeat
UFC 316 was a make-or-break event for Sean O’Malley. The American had lost the previous encounter via decision and was granted a rematch. However, any hope to regain his title was swiftly ended as Merab Dvalishvili submitted O’Malley in round three.
Following this, Tom Aspinall took to social media and gave his opinion. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Tom Aspinall said, “There’s definitely a debate for saying that (Dvalishvili) is potentially the bantamweight GOAT.”
“Merab looked absolutely unstoppable, just doing normal Merab stuff. Like staying on the outside, diving in with some crazy punches, 25 takedown attempts a round, or whatever he’s doing, how do you fight a guy like that?
“For me, I just think after round two, in all honesty, Sean O’Malley just didn’t seem to really want to be in there, he just didn’t really seem to know what to do next… Sean O’Malley just didn’t want to know anymore.”
Merab Dvalishvili Cements Himself as Bantamweight King
Despite the endless criticism of Sean O’Malley by UFC pundits and fighters, including Tom Aspinall, it shows how dominant the champion was. Merab Dvalishvili’s game plan was superb as his energy and output were too much for the American to handle. Blessed with incredible grappling, the Georgian fighter was able to secure his second defence dominantly.
Furthermore, with the O’Malley saga behind the champion, the future is looking ever-promising. Following the conclusion of UFC 316, fellow bantamweight Cory Sandhagen called out the champion to a fight. As well as this, it led to Petr Yan also adding his name to the equation.
