Dricus Du Plessis has expressed an interest in fighting Khamzat Chimaev if ‘Borz’ is able to beat Robert Whittaker in Saudi Arabia.
The middleweight champion is expected to defend his title at UFC 305 in Perth but an opponent has yet to be announced. With Israel Adesanya currently documenting his comeback, it is likely Du Plessis will face the former 185lb king.
The pair have an unsavory history and ‘Stillknocks’ is eager for the fight to take place against Adesanya.
“I’ve agreed to everything. I’m ready, I want to do it,” he told Fight Wave.
“That’s the fight I want. Let’s just announce this thing. I don’t know what’s the hold up.
“Maybe the UFC is waiting for something, I’m not sure. At the end of the day I’ve agreed to it. If they had to phone me today and say we’re doing the Sean Strickland second fight, I’d be like ‘great, let’s do it.’ If they say no, we’re going to wait and do the Khamzat fight, great.”
Dricus Du Plessis Would “Love” to Fight Chimaev
Khamzat Chimaev is due to face Robert Whittaker next week in Saudi Arabia. Du Plessis made it clear that the undefeated Chimaev is on his radar, but shot down talks of another Whittaker fight.
“Should he beat Whittaker, I would love to fight Khamzat,” he said.
“In my opinion, should Whittaker beat Khamzat, I don’t think it warrants him a title shot. Honestly would love to see him and Strickland fight it out for No.1 contender fight. I was willing to fight Strickland, Khamzat, Adesanya. I’m champion, I have to fight who they give me. I want to fight the best guy.”
A Man With Options
Once underrated and written off, Dricus Du Plessis now finds himself with a target on his back.
After his monumental TKO win over Whittaker at UFC 290, the South African beat Sean Strickland to capture gold. The doubters were silenced, but the win over Strickland was undeniably close.
Fans have called for a rematch, and Du Plessis isn’t against that option either.
“Strickland fans were like, ‘fight him again.’ I said ‘guys, I will fight him again.’ I don’t make that decision,” said Du Plessis.
